How to Adapt Writing Techniques as You Age

Chapter 1: The Journey of Writing
Writing has been a significant part of my life since I was just fourteen years old. My journey began with a vivid journal where I poured out every whimsical thought and silly incident. Writing felt effortless back then, and over the years, I've accumulated more than fifty journals. That's a substantial amount of ink used!
In my early school days, I had no trouble completing assignments by hand. Regardless of whether I used pencils, pens, or any other writing tool, expressing my ideas on paper was a breeze.
High school introduced me to typing, a game-changer for someone who has a passion for writing. Who could forget the sound of Royal typewriters or Smith Coronas? The rhythmic clattering of those keys was music to my ears.
Remember the distinctive bell that rang when the carriage reached the end of its line? And those IBM Selectric typewriters? They were revolutionary and served me well throughout the years.
As time has passed, however, I've noticed that writing by hand has become increasingly challenging. I attribute this to the years of using my fingers extensively. Tasks like sending holiday greetings, completing forms, or even signing my name have turned into chores I dread.
This is particularly disheartening because my love for writing remains strong. To alleviate the discomfort, I rely on Tylenol, topical ointments, and daily supplements, all of which seem to provide some relief. Although I've undergone cortisone injections, I often question whether they might exacerbate the issue in the long run.
Consequently, I’ve been exploring alternative methods to document my thoughts. Even extended typing sessions on the computer have become problematic, as my hands tire and can no longer perform as they once did. How can I sustain my writing career with these challenges?
I eventually stumbled upon the voice recognition software available on my iPhone and computer. What a blessing it is to speak my thoughts and see them transcribed with impressive accuracy! While I still need to make edits, it’s a far more comfortable experience than typing for hours and enduring the resulting discomfort.
So, how has your writing process evolved as you've aged? Do you still write longhand or prefer an old typewriter? Is typing on your laptop or iPad still manageable for you?
How many of you utilize recording software like I do? For those curious, it's that microphone symbol located on your keyboard.
