Chapter 1: The Boring Truth About Growing Up

When did we all become so mundane? I still remember the thrill of convincing my friend Jon to race his mountain bike full speed into a dirt mound, just to see the outcome.

This recollection seems nonsensical, but I often question my own development. There’s something inherently off about how I've navigated life. Doctors suspect bipolar disorder, though I haven't pursued a formal diagnosis.

In high school, I was the star quarterback and homecoming king, yet I never fit the typical jock mold. I wasn't the partying type, nor did I pursue girls or boast a flashy truck. Instead, I was a skateboarder, deeply immersed in music, and proudly emo. My social circle was limited to one close friend. Together, we created music videos in his garage, wielding guitars we never learned to play, as we aspired to be rock stars rather than mere musicians. The effort seemed disproportionate to the rewards.

We never let that deter us. In my friend Jake's garage, we’d crank our favorite tracks—be it Papa Roach, Linkin Park, or Tom DeLonge’s side projects—at full volume, pretending to perform just like the artists on MTV.

Jon even joined our band, but we assigned him fake drums because the idea of him actually playing his bass guitar felt off. He’d don sunglasses and take his shirt off, as drummers were known to do, pretending to thrash as if possessed. Jake and I would alternate as the lead singer, belting out lyrics without microphones while banging on unplugged electric guitars.

Over time, we developed distinct personas. I can't pinpoint how it started, but Jake would burst into the room mid-song, kicking things and thrashing on his red and white Gibson like a young Kurt Cobain. He even adopted the moniker "Crazy Guitar Kid." We meticulously scripted our performances, believing we were true artists.

When Jake received a video camera for his birthday in tenth grade, it was reminiscent of a scene from Home Alone 2, where Macaulay Culkin’s character uses a voice recorder for silly antics. Jake created solo videos, often wearing a sideways yellow visor and a tank top, performing choreographed dances to NSYNC or Backstreet Boys tracks. He was also a star athlete—except for football, thanks to his overprotective mother.

We often filmed reckless and ridiculous stunts, reminiscent of Jackass. Whether it was leaping off roofs into cactus patches or running into Porta-Potties, we sought thrills. We even smeared horse manure on our faces or launched bottle rockets from our backsides. Much of our mischief involved tormenting Jon, who took on the grosser challenges, while I tackled the more dangerous stunts. I doubt our parents ever caught wind of our escapades.

One memorable event involved a massive dirt mound created by a neighbor's construction project. Jake and I urged Jon to ride his mountain bike down a steep hill and straight into it. He didn’t even hesitate, barreling down without a helmet. As he hit the dirt pile, I expected a spectacular crash, but the soft dirt absorbed his impact, leaving us disappointed.

To salvage the moment, we convinced him to go faster, promising to flatten the dirt for better momentum. As he walked the bike up the hill, I decided to hide a large rock just out of sight.

The anticipation was palpable. When Jon finally launched himself at full speed, he collided with the mound like a rocket. His brand-new mountain bike crumpled in a split second, and the impact left a comical imprint on his forehead. We laughed until we cried, hiding his wrecked bike from our parents afterward.

What’s the takeaway? I’m not entirely sure. Life is meant to be enjoyable, yet it feels like we've lost that essence. Perhaps our adult worries and anxieties stem from abandoning our playful selves. We reminisce about carefree days of dancing, reliving our favorite albums, and engaging in innocent mischief.

So, I challenge you: try some light-hearted antics with your partner this week and share your experiences in the comments!
