TicWatch Pro 5 vs Google Pixel Watch: A Comprehensive Comparison
Written on
Introduction
Choosing between the Google Pixel Watch and Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 5 can be quite challenging. Every morning, I face the tough decision of which smartwatch to wear, and both have their unique strengths and weaknesses that cater well to my Google Pixel 7 Pro.
In this post, I will outline the advantages and disadvantages of each watch, drawing from my experiences with the first generation of the Pixel Watch, which I've been using for about a year, and the TicWatch Pro 5, which I've had for around 12 weeks.
Display Size Matters
When it comes to display size, the TicWatch Pro 5 wins hands down. The Pixel Watch features a 1.2-inch display, which, while functional, feels a bit cramped compared to the TicWatch's larger 1.43-inch screen. The additional screen real estate on the TicWatch makes it much easier to type and navigate apps, enhancing the overall user experience.
Moreover, the TicWatch Pro 5 boasts a dual display that not only extends battery life but also improves visibility in bright sunlight.
Health Apps: A Different Experience
I was initially excited about the integration of Fitbit with the Pixel Watch, anticipating an enhanced experience for WearOS users. However, my enthusiasm waned when I discovered that Google had removed some features I had come to enjoy, like competitive challenges with friends.
In contrast, the Mobvoi Health app offers a more detailed analysis of activities, making it superior to Fitbit's platform, which has become rather basic and relies on expensive subscription models for premium features.
Battery Life: A Clear Advantage
Battery performance is another area where the TicWatch Pro 5 excels. While I can usually get through a day and a night on the Pixel Watch, it often falls short with only about 1.5 days of usage at best. In contrast, the TicWatch Pro 5 consistently lasts around three days on a single charge, allowing me to forget about charging it regularly.
The Pixel Watch may have a decent charging routine, but it pales in comparison to the longevity of the TicWatch's battery life.
Updates: A Mixed Bag
One downside of the TicWatch Pro 5 is its update frequency. While it does receive updates, it has yet to see WearOS 4, which is disappointing. I remain optimistic that it will be updated soon, but the wait is frustrating.
On the bright side, Mobvoi's apps continue to receive updates, which is encouraging for the future.
Google Assistant: A Missing Feature
The Google Pixel Watch's integration of Google Assistant is a significant advantage, enabling voice commands for reminders and smart home controls. Unfortunately, the TicWatch Pro 5 lacks this feature, making it a less appealing option for those who rely heavily on voice assistance.
Having Google Assistant makes everyday tasks seamless, and I hope that this functionality will eventually be available on the TicWatch.
The Google Ecosystem
Another point in favor of the Pixel Watch is its deep integration with the Google ecosystem. Features like quick access to Google Home enhance the user experience. The TicWatch Pro 5, while capable, requires navigating through apps to access similar functionalities, which can be cumbersome.
Conclusion: A Matter of Preference
In conclusion, while I have my preference for the TicWatch Pro 5, it’s important to recognize that the Pixel Watch is still a solid choice. Each watch is designed for different users— the Pixel Watch for the average consumer and the TicWatch Pro 5 for outdoor enthusiasts.
Ultimately, it’s not a straightforward comparison; it’s more like comparing a Ferrari to a Range Rover, where both vehicles serve distinct purposes and excel in their respective domains.
