Unlocking Potential: A Journey from Mediocrity to Mastery

Written on

Chapter 1: The Weight of Unfulfilled Dreams

I once held grand aspirations, diligently studying and preparing for success. Yet, at the age of 40, I find myself languishing in mediocrity. However, I can take pride in one thing: my relentless pursuit of knowledge about high achievers. I’ve honed my ability to identify the common habits and mindsets that lead to success. A recent revelation about a certain individual has shed light on my own stagnation, and Ryan Tedder’s journey serves as a compelling example.

Who is Ryan Tedder?

Although I didn’t recognize his name at first, I have undoubtedly heard his music countless times. Ryan Tedder is the frontman of OneRepublic and a prolific musician, having produced hits for renowned artists like Leona Lewis, Adele, and Beyoncé. Remarkably, he is only 43 years old. Learning about his life made me wonder how different my path could have been.

Winning the Family Lottery

Ryan was born into a family rich in musical talent. His father was a gospel songwriter who even shared the stage with Elvis. Music was a family affair, with Ryan's uncle and cousins also performing. He learned to play the piano through the Suzuki method, immersing himself in music from a young age.

In contrast, my introduction to music came through my father's extensive rock collection from the '60s and '70s. While my parents supported my musical endeavors, they weren’t musicians themselves. At eight, I began guitar lessons, but unlike Ryan, I followed a rigid classical approach. Creativity was stifled, and I focused solely on reading music, disregarding the joys of learning by ear.

The Calling vs. The Fear

Millions enjoy music, but few feel compelled to perform. Ryan recognized his calling early, inspired by a drama teacher who saw potential in him. However, his Christian upbringing instilled a sense of humility that complicated his aspirations. He sang in a choir, where the focus was on service rather than self-expression, intensifying his fear of judgment.

This resonates with my own experiences. In music school, I was the standout guitar student, but performing in front of an audience felt like a daunting task. The pressure made me freeze, and decades later, I still grapple with the fear of being judged.

At 18, I received a Fender Stratocaster and joined two bands, but the anxiety never disappeared. Each performance was exhilarating, creating a bond with the audience that felt electric. But I prioritized my academics, leading to the decline of my musical pursuits. If only I had continued honing my skills alongside my passion for teaching and the rise of platforms like YouTube, I might have become a well-known content creator.

The Shadow Career

Ryan remained committed to music, impressing teachers and peers alike. He found the courage to enter an MTV competition, which ultimately led to his discovery by Timbaland.

Ryan Tedder's journey in music

Years earlier, Ryan learned that many popular songs weren’t penned by the artists themselves. He moved to Nashville, where he spent years producing music—a role he described as a "shadow career." This term, coined by Steven Pressfield, refers to engaging in activities that are related to one’s passion but fall short of fulfilling it completely.

Ryan understood he belonged on stage, yet chose the safer path of songwriting. My shadow career was my academic success; I thrived in school, but it never involved the scrutiny that comes with performing. While I don’t regret my academic choices, I do lament the neglect of my true passions.

Finally, OneRepublic

After a few years, Ryan’s time with Timbaland came to an end, and he felt ready to take the leap. He relocated to Los Angeles and formed OneRepublic. Their debut single, "Apologize," achieved remarkable success, reaching number two on the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks.

Ryan’s journey exemplifies the power of dedication and passion. He started with the fundamental chords that underpin many successful pop songs, thanks to hours spent analyzing radio hits. After two decades of commitment, creating melodies came naturally to him.

In contrast, I’ve written only one song for my wife, relying on intuition for the chord progression. Though melodies often come to me, I lack the training to transcribe them effectively.

Obsess Your Way to Success

I’ve often dismissed my unique feelings toward music, thinking they were commonplace. I should have embraced my passion and allowed it to flourish, even if it meant facing criticism or accepting less-than-perfect grades. Delving deeply into your interests is essential for developing exceptional skills.

As Ryan Tedder emphasizes, “To be great at anything, you have to be obsessed.”

While my reflection may seem bleak, I’m actively applying these lessons. I’m immersing myself in writing, enrolling in courses, and engaging with communities. Additionally, I’ve joined a cover band as the lead vocalist and guitarist, with our debut performance approaching.
